Red Rock Fairways: A St. George & Zion Golf Trip
Five red-rock courses, one desert base camp, and Zion an hour away
Play five of southern Utah's best public courses in three days, from lava-rimmed fairways at Sand Hollow to the mesa-top Ledges, with Zion and Snow Canyon on the side.
St. George sits in Utah's far southwest corner, where red sandstone, black lava and desert scrub frame some of the most scenic public golf in the country, and Zion National Park is about an hour away.
Five courses sit within roughly 15 miles of each other, so this is an easy base-camp trip. Weekday rates run $75 to $180 and the season is long, with March to May and September to November the best windows.

Suggested itineraries
- Day 1: Sand Hollow
Play Sand Hollow Resort's Championship course in Hurricane ($75 weekday). Designed by John Fought and Andy Staples and opened in 2008, it plays across red and white sandstone and black lava rock beside Sand Hollow State Park. Settle in, then have dinner at The Grille at Sand Hollow.
- Day 2: Canyon edges
Start at Copper Rock Golf Course in Hurricane ($80, a Dale Beddo design opened in 2020), with holes along a volcanic canyon and views toward Zion. Then drive about 4 miles to Coral Canyon Golf Course in Washington ($180 weekday, the splurge round of the trip; restaurant, rental clubs and driving range on site).
- Day 3: Mesa and desert
Play Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George ($88, the Blackrock and The Pointe nines, restaurant on site) in the morning, then drive about 10 miles to The Ledges Golf Club ($80, a Matt Dye design opened in 2006) on its mesa above Snow Canyon State Park for the finale. On a budget, Sky Mountain Golf Course in Hurricane ($78) or Green Spring Golf Course in Washington ($80) can replace Coral Canyon to cut about $100.
Where to stay
- Sand Hollow Resort: Vacation homes right next to the Day 1 course.

- Courtyard by Marriott St. George: Central base with easy drives to every course.
- The Advenire: Boutique downtown hotel with Wood. Ash. Rye downstairs.
- Red Mountain Resort: Spa-style stay in Ivins near Snow Canyon.
Where to eat

- Cliffside Restaurant and Fish Rock Grille: Two on-site options at The Ledges.
- The Painted Pony: Upscale dinner at Ancestor Square in St. George.
- Xetava Gardens Cafe: Relaxed lunch or dinner in Ivins.
- Wood. Ash. Rye.: Seasonal cooking in downtown St. George.
Getting around
Rent a car. Sand Hollow, Copper Rock and Coral Canyon are all within about 10 miles of each other, and the St. George courses are a short drive from there. St. George Regional Airport is the closest airport, and Las Vegas is about two hours away. Total driving between courses is about 32 miles.
Best time to visit
March to May and September to November are the best windows. Summer afternoons are very hot, so book early tee times then. Winter is mild but mornings are cooler.
Budget tips
- Play on weekdays and look for twilight rates, which drop noticeably in the hot months.
- Swap Coral Canyon ($180) for Sky Mountain ($78) or Green Spring ($80) to cut about $100 from the trip.
- Stay in Hurricane or St. George instead of the resort homes to keep lodging costs down.
- Bring a cooler with water and snacks; the heat is dry and rounds run long.
